A Little About Rei and Usagi.....
The story of Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon (BSSM) is the story of a young girl (Usagi) and her coming-of age. At the start of the story Usagi stumbles upon a talking black cat with a crescent moon on her forehead, named Luna, and she informs Usagi of her destiny as the fighting sailor-suited senshi -- Sailormoon. She learns from Luna that she is to find the Moon Princess and the Ginzuishou (Mystical Silver Crystal) and defeat the enemies from the past who have resurfaced.
To help Usagi with her quest, she and Luna find the other senshi, destined to help her defend the Earth. Rei is first introduced at her grandfather's Shinto shrine, where Usagi and Luna meet her. There during a confrontation with an enemy, Luna sees the sign of Mars on Rei's forehead and she is told of her destiny as the sailor senshi Sailormars who is to fight along with Sailormoon to protect the Earth from evil.
Rei and Usagi's relationship at first is quite rocky, mostly due to their very different personalities. Rei outwardly is a very cold, snobby, hotheaded individual as opposed to Usagi's clutsy, unreliable, fun-loving, free-spirited optimism. The girls clash at the beginning, especially due to Rei's disbelief that she would have to follow such a clutsy, crybaby as Usagi in battle. As Usagi matures and begins to settle into her role as Sailormoon and a past princess, all the senshi, especially Rei develop a great respect for Usagi.
Some may say that the two girls are rivals and hate each other, but I strongly disagree. Time and time again Rei expresses, verbally and nonverbally her support for Usagi. The fact that Rei even calls her 'Usagi' shows their extreme closeness. She leaves the honorific "san" or even "chan" off of Usagi's name, thus showing their closeness for each other. I thoroughly believe these two have a great love and respect for each other.
